Biography

Chetan Katigar is a contemporary Indian artist whose work serves as a vibrant bridge between traditional heritage and modern expression. Born in Hubbali, Karnataka, and raised in the culturally rich city of Surat, Gujarat, Katigar’s artistic journey began with a childhood curiosity about the mechanics of creation. This early fascination evolved into a rigorous academic pursuit, culminating in a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Shivaji University in 2018.

Deeply inspired by the legendary Raja Ravi Varma, Katigar specializes in a genre he describes as "Traditional Contemporary." His work is a soulful exploration of rural life, mythological deities, and the raw beauty of the natural world. With a palette intentionally restricted to seven earthy and vibrant tones—including yellow ochre, Indian red, and cadmium green—he employs bold, sweeping brushstrokes to translate personal experiences and hidden emotions onto the canvas.

For Katigar, art is a spiritual endeavor. Each piece is an attempt to "revitalize traditional art forms" while addressing 21st-century themes. He views the digital age and the internet as vital tools for global connection, allowing the spirit of Indian culture to reach an international audience. As he poignantly states, "A painting is not only painted canvas; it is the spirit of the artist." With a prolific exhibition history spanning from Dubai to Kolkata, Katigar continues to redefine the boundaries of Indian figurative art.
