Niroz Mondal

Niroz Mondal (born 6 April 1966) is a contemporary Indian abstract artist active from the 1990s to the present. Self-taught and rooted in the rural geography of Birbhum, West Bengal, Mondal developed an artistic practice bridging easel painting and architectural relief murals. His works explore non-representational emotional terrains, leveraging thick acrylic textures, rhythmic mark-making, and contemplative formlessness to bridge spatial architecture with personal memory.

Biography

Niroz Mondal’s artistic development is characterized by an ongoing inquiry into texture, spatial architecture, and non-figurative expression. Raised in Srirampur, West Bengal, Mondal’s practice evolved without formal institutional instruction, developing instead through sustained self-directed technical experimentation. His early engagements with rural environments informed a fundamental sensitivity to atmospheric change, horizons, and physical surfaces. Over decades of practice, Mondal expanded his study of form into the architectural domain through large-scale relief murals, an experience that directly influenced the tactile density, scale, and surface complexity of his paintings.

Philosophically, Mondal aligns with abstract expressionist principles, treating the canvas not as a window to a literal landscape, but as a site of emotional and temporal excavation. His practice is rooted in the search for the unseen within the visible, emerging from an inward journey where form, colour, texture, and space become means of approaching experiences that escape verbal expression. His artistic language avoids fixed narratives, allowing forms to remain open so that mystery and interpretation coexist within the work. For Mondal, abstraction is a continual practice of giving form to the formless—of discovering what lies behind appearance and beyond the immediately visible, positioning formlessness as a meditative state that shifts focus from visible realities to internal resonances and silent spaces. Through layered applications and gestural rhythm, Mondal contributes to contemporary Indian abstraction by integrating structural spatial sensibilities derived from architectural craft into fluid, memory-driven visual forms.
